Team leaves to seek Central intervention in NIT issue

The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL, Nov 11: A joint team of the Lamphelpat Protection and Preservation Committee, and the Langol Patta Land Residential Complex Protection Committee, led by ex-MP Kim Gangte, has left Imphal for New Delhi today to seek the intervention of Central leaders against the Manipur government`s proposal to set up the proposed National Institute of Technology at the Lamphel Langol area.

Kim Gangte, speaking to IFP before the team`s departure, said it had been decided to approach the Centre on the NIT issue because the state government continues to remain indifferent to the people`s opposition to the proposal to set up the NIT by taking over precious agricultural land in the Lamphel Langol area. This is despite the fact that several memoranda have been submitted to the chief minister, public meetings have been held and even a mass protest rally taken out, she stated.

She further informed that the five-member team would meet with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, concerned ministers and UPF chairperson Sonia Gandhi, to put their case before them and urge to intervene to ensure that an alternative site is selected for the NIT.
