New Delhi, November 24, 2007. (North East Support Centre & Helpline)

A local woman married to a man from Manipur was teased with abusive remarks and her husband threatened by a group of young people in Murnika, South Delhi, when he tried to silent the abusers. He was threatened to ride over by motor cycles.

At receiving of the information, NE Helpline rang up to Police Helpline number 100 and the matter was reported. By the time the Police escort arrived 30 minutes late, the gang fled from the sport.

The police took the statement from the victims with the motor cycle numbers on which the abusers ran away. Until the filing of the report, police have not apprehended any of the abusers.

The incident happened when the couple residing at Raja Garden, New Delhi went to visit their relatives living in Murnika on November 22 at zero hour of the night. “I parked my car and enquired address of my relative to a group of people who were hanging around. Looking at me as from North East India, they started teasing my wife with abusive remarks, which aroused my wife in anger. I tried to silent the mob but I was threatened to ride over by motor cycle,” says the victim.

Unreported Discriminations and Racial Harassments Reported

The unreported stories of racial discrimination, harassment at work places and abuses to the people belonging to North East India have been revealed while talking to numbers of individuals living in Delhi and NCR.

“My friends from Nagaland, having searching NE Support Centre & Helpline numbers to report about how they were suspended from a call centre in Delhi and their salary have been withheld without reasons given,” girl told to NE Support Centre & Helpline.

Many individuals have contacted NE Support Centre & Helpline with complaints of harassment by the employers, suspension from job and delay and non-payment of salary.

Going to police station to register complaint against the defaulters is strange to many of the victims and they fee easy to let go most of the cases of the harassments without reporting to police due to the ignorance.

The defaulters find North East people soft target in the fact that they realize that North East people do not complain.

When NE Support Centre & Helpline suggests them to lodge FIR in police stations, parents back at home suggest refraining from such complaint. In such case, neither NE Support Centre & Helpline nor police can do much about them.

The mindset of North East people will also need to change about registering the complaint in police station as without registering the complaints, the sensitization to Government and general public will not be possible.

Due to the lack of people to help in the time of crisis, most young boys and girls from North East India suffer silently. They face more injustice when their complaints are refused by police duty officers.

The incidents of abuses, harassment and racial discrimination registering into documentation are very important for the purpose of sensitizing to the government and police. More sensitization brought to the public and government authorities, will help preventing and reducing harassment, abuses and racial discrimination.

NE Support Centre & Helpline suggests the North East public living in the capital and NCR to utilize the police helpline 100 in the time of crisis. If possible from victims own telephone or mobile number and informing police helpline the nature of harassment clearly with clear cut address of the locality where crime takes place. NE Support Centre & Helpline may also be contacted in written by hand, post or fax.
